Australian sea lions are the country’s only endemic species of sea lion – they are found only in Australia and nowhere else in the world.  They are also listed as endangered by the world’s leading authority on animal conservation, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  To help protect Australian sea lions, scientific research is needed to understand more about their ecology, use of the marine environment, and interactions with humans.  To learn more about these animals, please visit the Education section.

This website focuses on the work of one particular research project, “Developing a photo-identification software for individual recognition of Australian sea lions through a community-based approach”.  To discover more about this work, check out the Research section.  As part of this research, the Whisker Patrol webpage was created to test new research techniques with help from the general public.
